Anakhi
Surjit
Anakhi was born and raised in Walsall. Wanting to follow
his passion at the age of 12 gave him the courage to
sing in front of the congregation at his local Gudwara.
At the age of 16, he started to follow his ambition of
music by, joining a group named ekta. There he played
congos and drums under the influence of reaching his
goal. He travelled most parts of England performing for
mainly weddings and special occasions. During his time
in ekta he started to understand the principles of
singing.
6 months into ekta he started singing bolliyan for a
Punjabi folk dance group named diwnans. They entered
world wide competitions such as eistedford in
Llangollen, Wales. They performed in one of the wonders
of the world, Royal Albert Hall. They carried out a
typical folk dance with Surjit Anakhi singing in front.
This was one of the milestones of his career.
Whilst with diwnans Surjit Anakhi was being taught by
professor Amar Singh and then later learned from the
great late Ustad Jaswant Singh Bhambra.
He left ekta and diwnans to take up a vacant post as a
joint lead singer in a band called tafaaq. Where he did
weddings and many other occasions. Anakhi wanted to
leave this band after 1 year wanting to start his won
band named Anakhi.
Anakhi was formed in 1991. In 1992 march 11th Anakhi’s
first EP track was released. This EP shot the band to
fame and made them the house hold name. The EP went
straight to no.1 in its first week that it was released.
In the same year they produced a 6 track album named
total Anakhi. In the 1993 they released scream they were
nominated in the category of best new comers which
fortunately they won.
In the following year they succeeded in winning a second
award of best up coming band. And subsequently the band
was now well known people and band in their well known
rights. They toured Switzerland, Kenya, Scotland and
India. The following albums released after the fame
shooting scream were
